Learn about energy use with a smart meter!

SOS-UK is partnering with Smart Energy GB to promote energy literacy. Most of the energy we use daily comes from fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas). These are non-renewable sources of energy that pollute the environment, contribute to the climate crisis and can make us ill. It’s important that we reduce energy use! Smart meters can help you better understand your energy use in the home, which is the first step.

Smart meters also have other benefits:

  1. They show how much energy you’re using in near real-time, and what it’s costing you
  1. They could help you identify where you’re wasting energy
  1. They are a simple step to get more control over your energy use and bills
  1. They can help you access schemes and tariffs that reward you for changing how and when you use energy

If you pay your bills directly, you are automatically entitled to get a smart meter at no extra cost – just request one from your supplier (or search ‘how to get a smart meter’). It’s recommended that you let your landlord know before you make the change.

If your landlord pays the bills, you can also get a smart meter, and it’s mutually beneficial for both of you. Speak to your landlord about upgrading.

We will be running a Smart Meter Action Week on our social media channels from 16th September 2024. We have a range of activities planned that will get you thinking and learning about energy use, smart meters, bills, and sustainability whilst renting. For example, you can learn about how, with the help of a smart meter and the in-home display that shows you how much energy you are using in near real-time, you can stay on top of your energy use and bills.

Getting involved in the week of action will not only be educational – you'll also be able to win prizes for taking part, so it’s definitely worth it! Make sure to follow SOS-UK at @sosuk_charity to find out which prizes are available on which day.

If you can’t wait already, you can find out more about smart meters on Smart Energy GB’s website. To find out more about saving energy at home, see our moving tips on our website and instagram account.
