Divest-Invest

We want to move £100 million out of fossil fuel investments and into renewable alternatives that support a just transition.

In 2016, our huge wave of freedom of information requests found that there was at least £100 million invested in fossil fuels across our education system. Students think that this is unethical investment, and so we want to move every penny of it into renewable energy instead.

As part of this we must ensure that reinvestment is decolonial – we must not replicate the current structures of power that exist. Large scale renewable energy corporations have already been complicit in land grabs in the Global South in an echo of the fossil fuel industry’s colonial behaviour and it’s down to us to ensure that the transition we pioneer in our campaigns is just and equitable. This means that wherever we reinvest everyone is included and benefits. This might be achieved through supporting community energy projects based in the global south, in our local communities or even on our very own campuses.

Find out more about how to campaign on divest-invest, and check out our new campaign, Invest for Change, to find out more about what to do with the money instead. We also have some resources on positive re-investment (community energy and positive investment briefings).
