Go 100% Renewable

We want all universities and colleges to be powered by renewable electricity.

83 per cent of students and staff think their institution should buy or generate renewable electricity.

But only 39 per cent of electricity used across higher education is renewable, and less than 1 per cent is generated by institutions. This is at the same time that 2 out of 5 universities are on track to miss their own carbon targets.

We can do better than this. It's time to go 100 per cent renewable.

This initiative has been inspired by The Climate Group and CDP’s RE100, which focuses on getting businesses to commit to being powered by renewable electricity. Neally 100 companies have signed up already, including big global players such as Facebook and Ikea.

We want to replicate this across our education system, helping our universities and colleges be at the forefront of the transition from fossil fuels to renewables.

Why go renewable?

  • Reputational benefits in being a part of the clean electricity revolution and positive communications celebrating progress made.
  • Networking hubs – UK and US educational institutions can learn across international borders.
  • Strengthening of community relationships.
  • Contributing to the progression of the divestment from fossil fuels and investment in a socially and environmentally responsible sector.
